World Ocean Day is celebrated on 8th June Every year. First World Ocean day was celebrated in 1992. Canada’s International Centre for Ocean Development and the Ocean Institute of Canada Proposed this concept at the UN Conference on Environment and Development In Brazil.
After this Brundtland Commission provided the inspiration to celebrate World Ocean day on a global level. In 1987 The Brundtland Commission report the ocean sector to have a weak voice compare to the other sector. After this Intergovernmental and NGO discuss the policy and strengthen the voice of the ocean sector on the first time celebration of the world ocean day in 1992.
There has been lots of effort to promote world ocean day since 2002. In this year The ocean project starts working with all leading organizations including world ocean Network, Association of Zoos and Aquarium and has been promoting World Oceans Day together.
Why Celebrate World Oceans Day?
This Day reminds everyone of the role of the oceans in our everyday life. We celebrate World Oceans Day to remind everyone of the major role the oceans have in everyday life. Oceans are the Lungs of our planet. Oceans Provides Most of the Oxygen we breathe.
Main Purpose of this day is to raise awareness about ocean publicly. All citizens and people from all around the world have to develop a worldwide movement for the ocean and mobilize the unit for the world’s ocean. Oceans are major Source of food and medicines because it is a critical part of the biosphere. World ocean day is a day to celebrate together the beauty, the wealth and the promise of the ocean.
World Ocean Day 2019 Theme
The theme for world Ocean 2019 is “Gender and the Oceans”.We all have an opportunity to explore the gender dimension of humankind’s relationship with the ocean. This year, we build greater ocean and gender literacy. We discover possible ways to promote gender equality in ocean-related activities such as marine scientific research, fisheries, as well as policy-making and management.
The importance of gender equality in particular Ocean sector for the effective conservation and sustainable use of oceans, seas, and marine resources. However, there is very little data about the empowerment of women and girls is still needed in all ocean-related sectors.
This year The UN is hosting a conference in celebration of World Oceans Day. Speakers and storytellers from all around the world join this conference to Build greater ocean and gender equity.

The theme 2011 is “Our Oceans: greening our future”.
The theme for 2012 is “UNCLOS @ 30”.
The theme for 2013 is “Oceans & People”.
The theme for 2014 is “Ocean Sustainability: Together let’s ensure oceans can sustain us into the future”.
The theme for 2015 is “Healthy Oceans, Healthy Planet”.
The theme for 2016 is “Healthy Oceans, Healthy Planet”.
The theme for 2017 is “Our Oceans, Our Future”.
The theme for 2018 is “Clean our Ocean!”.
